Volume quotes

Big shipment? Get a volume rate, not a penalty.

Standard LTL pricing isn't designed for large shipments. Volume LTL quotes price freight by the trailer space it uses, often saving significantly on shipments of six or more pallets, over 5,000 pounds, or longer than 12 linear feet.

What is a volume LTL quote?

Volume LTL, sometimes called spot or partial truckload pricing, is a rate a carrier offers for a specific large shipment based on the trailer space it will occupy and the carrier's available capacity on the lane. Instead of applying standard tariff pricing, the carrier quotes a single price for the load.

Most LTL carriers apply linear-foot rules. A shipment that occupies more than 10 to 14 linear feet of a trailer can be charged as if it filled that space even when the declared weight is low. Volume quoting avoids these surprises by pricing the space up front.

When to request a volume quote

Request a volume quote when your shipment has six or more standard pallets, weighs more than 5,000 pounds, takes more than 12 linear feet of trailer space, or includes non-stackable freight that consumes floor space. Volume pricing is also useful for recurring lanes where you ship large quantities on a schedule.

Volume quotes are typically valid for a specific pickup date and must be booked with the quote reference so the carrier honors the price.

Volume LTL vs. full truckload

A full truckload dedicates a 53-foot trailer to your shipment. For freight that fills a quarter to three-quarters of a trailer, volume LTL or partial truckload is often much cheaper while still moving with fewer handling points than standard LTL.

Volume quoting is on our roadmap for automated rating inside Delivered In Time. Today our team can gather volume and partial truckload quotes across carriers for you.

Volume LTL Quotes FAQs

How many pallets qualify for volume LTL?

Generally six or more standard pallets, or any shipment taking over 12 linear feet of trailer space.

Are volume quotes cheaper than standard LTL?

Often, yes. Large shipments priced at standard LTL rates can be charged linear-foot or cubic capacity minimums. Volume pricing reflects actual capacity.

How long is a volume quote valid?

Volume quotes are usually tied to a specific pickup date and carrier capacity, so they are valid for a short period.
