Residential & liftgate

Freight delivered where there's no loading dock.

Not every address has a dock and a forklift. Residential and liftgate delivery bring palletized freight to homes, small storefronts, farms, and job sites, lowering it safely to the ground.

What is liftgate service?

A liftgate is a hydraulic platform on the back of a truck that lowers freight from the trailer bed to ground level. It is needed when the pickup or delivery location has no dock and no forklift. Liftgate service is typically limited by pallet weight and size, often around 2,000 to 2,500 pounds per pallet and pallets no longer than about 96 inches, depending on the carrier.

Liftgate delivery gets freight to the curb or driveway. Moving it inside a home or building is a separate inside-delivery service.

Residential freight delivery

Carriers add a residential charge when delivering to homes, home-based businesses, apartments, and locations in residential zones. Residential deliveries use smaller trucks, require scheduling with the recipient, and take more time than dock-to-dock business deliveries.

Most carriers call the recipient to arrange a delivery window. A reachable phone number on the bill of lading is essential to avoid failed deliveries and redelivery fees.

Limited-access locations

Limited-access sites include schools, churches, farms, military bases, prisons, construction sites, storage units, and remote or rural locations. These addresses restrict access or require special handling and are billed a limited-access fee. Declaring the location type at quoting keeps your rate accurate.

Residential delivery checklist

  • Mark the address as residential or limited access
  • Add liftgate if there is no dock or forklift
  • Add inside delivery if freight must go indoors
  • Provide a recipient phone number
  • Check street access for a delivery truck
  • Confirm someone can receive and sign

Residential & Liftgate FAQs

Do I need a liftgate for residential delivery?

Almost always. Homes rarely have a loading dock or forklift, so a liftgate is needed to lower the pallet.

Will the driver bring freight inside?

Not with standard liftgate delivery. Request inside delivery if freight needs to go past the threshold.

Why was I charged a residential fee?

Carriers add it when the delivery address is a residence or in a residential area, even if a business operates there.
