How standard LTL works
When you book a standard LTL shipment, a carrier picks up your palletized freight and brings it to a local terminal. There it is sorted and loaded onto a linehaul trailer with freight headed in the same direction. The trailer moves through the carrier's hub-and-spoke network, and your pallets are delivered from the destination terminal to the consignee.
Because freight is handled at terminals along the way, standard LTL is priced lower than dedicated or full truckload service. Transit times typically range from one day for regional lanes to five or more business days for coast-to-coast shipments, depending on the carrier and the lane.
Standard LTL is ideal for manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers, e-commerce sellers, and warehouses moving business-to-business freight on a regular basis.
